Bringing More to the Table – Capital Campaign

Dear Neighbors:

In early December of 2014, Helping Harvest (HH) publicly launched its capital campaign titled “Bringing More to the Table” to acquire the funding for a larger warehouse. The local demand for food assistance tripled in the past 18 years. More people in need of food assistance equates to more inventory to supply them with a few boxes of nourishment throughout the year.

Currently, HH provides food for 41,500 different people on a monthly basis; 112,400 overall in a year in both Berks and Schuylkill counties. Children . . . 26,900 in number, as well as 17,000 senior citizens, depended upon the Food Bank last year. Annually, HH distributes more than 7 million pounds of food valued at over $11 million, through 312 partner agencies (food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens), as well as through its direct service programs (Senior Totes, Weekender Backpack, Produce 4 Kids, Mobile Market).

apple_bfb_revWe ran out of warehouse space, and were unable to adequately meet this demand at our former location. Because of this critical need for nourishment and the volume of people relying on our food for their daily diets, the HH’s Board of Directors made a huge decision to begin the search for a larger warehouse. After careful consideration of all aspects they identified a property. The purchase was made with borrowed money. We have moved in and are already seeing the difference, and are so very encouraged. But now we face another difficult task . . . paying for this new facility.

Even as we begin to reach out to the community for support, hundreds of people have already “come to the table” with their generous support. Most have made pledges to be paid over three years. Others have given outright gifts. In total we have already raised more than $2 million towards our goal of $3 million.

We still must “bring more to the table.” So we ask for your thoughtful consideration, and a pledge or gift to the capital campaign for Helping Harvest . . . and more importantly for the people who depend upon it.
Thank you,

Peg Bianca
