As stated by the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of “food bank” is as follows:

Noun
“A place where stocks of food, typically basic provisions and non-perishable items, are supplied free of charge to people in need.”

Sounds simple enough I’d say. But consider the variety of people that need food assistance.

1 in 8 people struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. (1,674,420 people)
1 in 6 children struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. (482,130 children)
30% seniors qualify for a supplemental nutrition assistance program.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the diversity of food insecurity in Pennsylvania. In order for GBFB to reach all those who are in need, we facilitate more than 300 programs that distribute food in creative and innovative ways.

For example, in order to reach children in need, the Weekender Program was created. On Fridays, students in participating schools who qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program receive a bag of non-perishable foods to share with their families over the weekend.

And in order to get perishable, fresh produce to children in the city if Reading, the Produce 4 Kids Program was implemented.

In our more rural locations, the Mobile Market sets up shop to provide a farmers market-style opportunity for neighbors to select fresh produce for their home.

One hundred pantries have joined our team in order to help get food to those in need. The same can be said about our hardworking shelters and soup kitchens.

Senior Food Totes filled with non-perishable foods are provided to qualifying seniors as well.

In order for GBFB to reach the amount of people who request food assistance during the year, 300 programs have been created. These programs range from Berks County to Schuylkill County.

It is true that the definition of “food bank” is quite straight forward, however, the way in which the need is met to feed those who are hungry takes a large amount of planning and outside help.
